The Macintosh Bible, 5th Edition

The Job
In 1994, Peachpit Press acquired The Macintosh Bible, a 1100-page encyclopedia of all things Macintosh, from its creator, who had managed it through four ever-growing editions. Peachpit’s job was to carry on the book's quirky traditions after its charismatic leader was gone—and update it for the major changes that came with the Macintosh’s then-new operating system, System 7.

The Solution
As overall editor of the 5th edition, I hired seven subeditors, and the oversaw the development of a new structure, a new graphic design, the contributions of more than 100 individual writers, and the production of the book. The new edition strove to keep the flavor of the previous editions, while establishing a new voice, based on the collaboration among experts rather than its opinionated creator. Several innovations of this edition, such as the “Editors’ Polls,” have been carried through to all following editions.
