Macromedia Flash
Interface Design

The Job
By 2002, Macromedia Flash was proving itself as an exciting medium for Web effects impossible in HTML, but usability experts tended to dissuade its use. Too often, “Flash” got in the way of function. Macromedia Press wanted to publish a book showing examples of good Web design with Flash and contracted with me to write it.

The Solution
To write the book, I scoured the Web for exemplary Flash design in as many categories as I could find. The book added my own analysis of notable design features of each site to statements from the site’s designers about their techniques and intentions. Sidebars in each chapter offered an in-depth look at the Flash code behind a particularly useful feature of the site in question.
