Editing and Publishing Strategy

The Little PC Book

The Job
In 1994, Peachpit Press Publisher Ted Nace wanted to create the easiest-to-understand book about PCs ever written, designed to explain their use to the legion of beginners who then had no clue what a PC was or did. He contracted with columnist Larry Magid to write the text and asked me to edit and produce the book.

The Solution
As editor, I helped Magid organize and simplify the text. As the book’s packager, I found cartoonist John Grimes to supply over 100 humorous and informative drawings illustrating the concepts and contracted with designer Chuck Routhier to create a scannable, accessible design. The result became the pattern for further volumes in Peachpit’s successful “Little” book series. The book is still in print, in its fourth edition.
