The Job
“Information design,” as popularized by designer Richard Saul Wurman, was a hot topic in the early 1990s. The publisher of IDG’s Publish magazine wanted to use the approach to appeal to the magazine’s graphic design audience. He paired me, as editor in chief, with Ed Marsen, creative director, to see whether we could create a magazine in which graphics and text were equal partners in the communication of information.

The Solution
We developed a magazine whose feature well was built of graphic spreads that showed how publishing projects were created, step by step. Editors and designers worked as creative teams in the development of each article, The design firm YO art-directed.
